Disorder 'antithesis of culture'

THE PSNI in Londonderry has put on display a cache of petrol bombs recovered from the Bogside area in the wake of the Twelfth demonstration in the City.

Stressing that sectarianism and disorder were “the antithesis of culture”, Inspector Jon Burrows vowed the PSNI would be taking determined action to identify those responsible for those responsible for the disorder which flared recently. Around 30 petrol bombs were recovered on July 12 and 13 in the Bogside, and on Friday morning were put on display at Strand Road PSNI station.

Speaking on Friday, following the release of the first batch of over 70 images of people the PSNI want to speak to in connection with disorder in the City, Inspector Burrows said: “We have seen some ugly scenes across the province this year and the police are determined to take positive action in identifying and charging everyone involved in riotous and sectarian behaviour.

“After disorder last summer in Derry, which was linked to parades, we arrested and brought criminal proceedings against over 100 people who were involved in riotous behaviour and today we release the first batch of our 70 images we have of individuals we want in identify in relation to sectarian and riotous behaviour at the Fountain Interface,” the senior policeman said.

He continued: “Sectarianism and disorder are the antithesis of culture and as this City begins preparations for hosting the fist UK city of culture in 2013 there is no more urgent task than to unite together to identify those people who tarnish the image of our City and to work together to ensure we don't see the ugly scenes of recent times on our streets again.”
