Foyle Search and Rescue receives a portion of £27,000 seized by Ulster's police officers

RIVER rescue charity in Londonderry has received a portion of £27,000 generated from the sale of property and money received as a result of criminal investigations.

The Northern Ireland Policing Board recently announced approval of just over 27,000 from the Police Property Fund to be distributed amongst 16 local charities.

The Fund is made up of income generated from the sale of property and money received asa result of criminal investigations, where the owners have not been identified or the property has remained unclaimed.

Foyle Search and Rescue has received 1,800 from the fund and the money will be used to refurbish their Headquarters in Victoria Road.

Speaking about the award Paddy Wilson of Foyle Search and Rescue said: "We are delighted that we have received this funding which will help towards creating a better working environment for our volunteers.

"All our workers give their time free of charge so to be able to improve our facilities will certainly help our service delivery."

Talking about the fund, Policing Board Vice Chairman, Gearoid OhEara said:"The Policing Board is pleased to be able to approve this award to Foyle Search and Rescue where the money will be used in a positive way to help create a safer environment for all our community."

Chairperson of the District Policing Partnership, Alderman Joe Miller, added: "I am pleased that the DPP took the initiative to partner Foyle Search and Rescue to submit an application to the fund.

"Foyle Search and Rescue has been working in the local community since 1993 to save lives in and around the River Foyle and I believe they are a worthy recipient of the award."

Local PSNI Area Commander, Chief Inspector Chris Yates, commented: "The police in the city are acutely aware of the valuable work the Foyle Search and Rescue volunteers carry out in making the river and its banks a safer place for all.

"As the local Area Commander I had no hesitation in recommending this application to the Policing Board and I am sure that this support will go some way to sustaining the valuable service this charity provides for all members of our community."
