Fun day at rugby club

THE Family Fun Day held at Lurgan Rugby Club last Saturday was a great success.

Bathed in glorious sunshine the team from Shankill Church exceeded all expectations raising almost 2,500. The organiser, Andrew Davis, was delighted with the turn-out and the support he received from friends and well wishers.

Kicking off at 10am the more adventurous enjoyed the five metre climbing wall and explored the Viking long ship - Ellen Dhou.

Ulster player, Declan Fitzpatrick, arrived at 11am and was on hand to sign Ulster posters and talk to young fans. Declan also made the draw for a signed Ulster ball which was won by Aimee Currans.

On the rugby pitches the Armagh troop came through to win the Cub Rugby Blitz ahead of teams from First Lurgan, Second Lurgan, Moira, Aughnacloy and Lisburn.

Lurgan YDO, Jonny Gillespie, was delighted with the standard of play from the Cubs and hopes to see some of the boys back in September to continue with the sport.

At the penalty shoot Jason Jackson singled out one lucky winner who received a signed picture of Fernando Torres, whilst over at the 'Sponge-Throw' Vance McIlhenny had no such luck as he took a soaking in a bid to raise funds for the Uganda project.

The Shankill Parish team have only seven weeks to go before they travel to Uganda. Although delighted with the result of the Fun Day they are still working hard to achieve their target of 40,000.

Anyone interested in buying bricks to support the project should contact Laura Kenwell, Andrew Davis or call into the Jethro centre.
