GEE-WHIZZ: Whizzkids pedal into action!

With the sport of cycling continually on the rise across the North Coast, Whizzkids is back for another season, and bigger than ever.

Whizzkids started in 2013 in a bid to promote the sport in a safe environment.

After hosting a series of successful Whizzkids events over the last few years, Bann Wheelers has taken the step to provide a structured programme, to be delivered by trained coaches and instructors, and now opened up to children not associated with the cycling club.

The cycling programme will include skill based activities giving each participant more confidence on their bike. A typical session could include obstacle courses, forest and cycle path rides, and skill based activities in a controlled environment.

The sessions have been divided into two age groups over five weeks. “SPROCKETS” (approximately 6-8 years) is largely based in a car park setting. It will start at 1pm and will finish at 2.15; “GEARERS” (approximately 9 years +) is skills / warm-up exercises in the car park or grass area and forest / MTB riding, and will take place from 2.30 until 4pm.

Whizzkids will run operate over 5 sessions with the first take placing on the following dates: April 2nd; 9th, 23rd and 30th and the final session will take place on May 7.

Andy Bate, who is co coordinating the programme explained: “The cost is £25 per child for the five sessions or £40 for two family members. All of the sessions will take place at the University, Coleraine. All you need is your bike, and no child will permitted to ride without a helmet. Apart from that as long as the kids are dressed appropriately for the outdoors and bring a drink they’ll enjoy it.” For a registration form email [email protected]
