Green belt must be protected, council told

DEVELOPMENTS in planning policy must not weaken the protection against over development afforded to rural areas.

This is the message from Cllr Stewart Dickson, who has called for clarification of the likely impact of the new planning policy statement 21.

The Alliance representative told this week’s council meeting: “If PPS21 is superseding the Department of the Environment’s designation of green belt, we need to be absolutely sure that it provides the single most robust route to defending green belt.”

Cllr Roy Beggs also called for guidance on the predicted consequences of a new addendum to PPS7, designed to protect the character of established residential areas.
