Covering elements of the KS1 curriculum, the Lidl Fit Factor aims to teach children the importance of a healthy lifestyle – how eating healthier, exercising regularly and looking after ourselves today can seriously reduce long term health problems tomorrow.

Niamh McDaid, Cancer Prevention Officer at Cancer Focus NI said: “The programme is free and straightforward. The children simply have to design an exciting poster highlighting ways to be healthy. It can focus on healthy foods, food labels, physical activity and lifestyles and the more creative, the better!

“Nowadays we’re very aware of how poor nutrition and lack of physical activity can lead to obesity, a greater risk of cancers and other serious health conditions. The good news, however, is that nearly 50% of all cancer deaths could be prevented by improved nutrition and regular exercise.

“With almost 20% of children in Northern Ireland classed as overweight before they start primary school1, it’s clearly a problem that needs to be addressed. We believe that the Lidl Fit Factor programme prompts pupils to think about healthy lifestyle choices and hopefully carry these choices with them throughout their lives.”

Sinead Flynn, Corporate Social Responsibility Assistant, Lidl NI added: “The Lidl Fit Factor is now celebrating its 10th year and has more schools participating than ever before. It’s a fantastic resource for teachers offering great ideas, fun activities and educational games to help children learn about healthy living.”
