Have you the CU Factor?

TEENAGERS from across the borough are being invited to join the search for Northern Ireland’s next singing star with the announcement that Credit Unions are inviting applications for the 2012 CU Factor – the competition where previous X-Factor finalist Janet Devlin first made her mark.

The event, which has developed into one of the highlights of the Northern Ireland entertainment calendar will see five local heats, including one at Portglenone and will culminate with a grand final in Cookstown on May 12.

Organiser Deirdre Mayo said: “The CU Factor is now one of the largest community run events in Northern Ireland and this year looks set to grow even bigger – with one of five heats confirmed for Portglenone. Once again Credit Unions in Co Antrim are offering our young people an opportunity to showcase their talents and perhaps follow the footsteps of previous participants such as Janet.

Even before we announced the details of the 2012 event we were overwhelmed by the level of interest from young people – with over 2,000 following our facebook page in advance of our public launch.

We have shown that there is plenty of talent in Antrim and communities across Northern Ireland and clearly the competition has struck a chord with those young people who want to reach for the stars. The CU Factor is open to singers aged between 12-19 years old.

The Portglenone heat will take place in the Wild Duck Inn on Tuesday, April 10.

Again this year we are delighted to have the support of Broadcaster Connor Phillips who is going to MC the final.

While the CU Factor already has a proud track record of identifying new talent from Northern Ireland – it is also an important opportunity for Credit Unions to reach out to young people which are becoming increasingly difficult to reach.

It allows us to give them a sense of community and highlight the work that Credit Unions are doing to help our 410,000 members of all ages across Northern Ireland to meet their financial needs without falling into a cycle of debt.”

Heats of the CU Factor have been confirmed for Portglenone, Armagh, Derry, Omagh and Belfast between 10th-14th April, with the final on 12th May in the Burnavon Theatre in Cookstown. Full details including rules and application forms are available on facebook by searching for CU Factor.
