Kids enjoy summer scheme fun at Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre

Thirty eight children have taken part in the Ballymoney Community Cohesion Project’s “Summer Fun for Kids”, which was held at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre between Monday 18th and Thursday 21st August.

Children, aged between 7 and 11, took part in a variety of workshops which aimed to encourage social development, as well as providing an opportunity to meet and make friends with other children, support peace and reconciliation and promote good relations within the Ballymoney Borough Council area.

Cultural awareness was also a key feature of the Summer Scheme, with ArtsEkta providing cultural coaches who explored India, China, Africa and Latin America through visual art, dance and music.

Children also had the opportunity to try on traditional clothing, and learn more about what life was like in each culture.

Other workshops during the Summer Scheme included circus skills, sports, arts & crafts, as well as a visit from Aunt Sandra’s chocolate road show and WheelWorks’ ArtCart, where children created their own music track.

“The enthusiasm of the kids throughout the Summer Scheme showed what a great success it was”, commented the Cohesion Officer Sarah Harkness.

“I’d like to thank all the children who took part in the event, as well as the parents who supported it.

The Ballymoney Community Cohesion Project is delivered by Ballymoney Borough Council, funded under the European Union’s PEACE III programme .

It is managed on behalf of the Special EU Programmes Body by the North East PEACE III Partnership.

The Special EU Programmes Body awarded £4.1 million to the North East PEACE III Partnership to deliver strategic programmes aimed at building positive relations at a local level.

The Programme covered training, development and support in a range of areas including reconciliation; leadership; citizenship; interfaith and inter Church relations; cultural awareness; victims support and conflict resolution.

The PEACE III Programme is a European Union funded initiative aimed at “reinforcing progress to a peaceful and stable society” in Northern Ireland.

In total the European Union has provided £330 million Euro to Northern Ireland and the Border Counties for the 2007-2013 period.
