Lagan Valley midwives meet mums in Lisburn

MIDWIVES were out in Mothercare in Bow Street recently taking the opportunity to talk with mums to promote breastfeeding and to spread the word that women of the Lisburn area can choose to have their births in the homely surroundings of the Midwifery Led Unit in Lagan Valley Hospitaln.

Lagan Valley Midwifery Led Unit received the ‘Baby Friendly Award’ in 2006 and were part of the first Trust in Northern Ireland to meet all the best practice standards on their first assessment. The South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust continues to reach this high standard to day.

Lagan Valley Midwives have been striving to support and encourage their mums in helping them to breast feed with over 65% choosing to do so.

Midwife Joanne Rowntree said she was very impressed with many of the Lisburn women who told them of their commitment to breast feeding and their wish to have natural birthing supported by experienced midwives.

She said there are many positive reasons to choose to breastfeed. It is free, available anywhere, any time and gives your child the best start in life. It also provides the baby with a stronger immune system, improves bonding and reduces childhood obesity and Type 2 Diabetes. For mums’ health, it lowers the risks of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis in later life. Breastfeeding also uses 500 calories a day so helps you to lose those extra pounds you gained in pregnancy!

It is hoped to have an open evening at the end of September to allow everyone to see the facilities provided at the LVH Midwifery led unit.
