LCDI call for volunteers

LIMAVADY Community Development Initiative are calling on people this year to give up their time and lend a little bit of their hearts to becoming a volunteer for their local community.

As the New Year commences and resolutions are made the charity, which currently works with up to 20 volunteers, is asking those with that little bit extra time on their hands to support a much needed cause. Everything from driving to elderly care right up to welfare advice are areas currently needing help from volunteers in LCDI. General Manager of the local charity, Mr. Damien Corr has regularly acknowledged the work that volunteers do in addition to LCDI's 60 employees calling it "the driving force of Community Development" which continues to be at "the heart" of all good community projects.

Mr Corr said: "January is traditionally the time when people look to make a change in their lives. Over the years many have chosen Volunteering and have never looked back."

Mary McNickle of the Limavady Volunteer Centre (with over 500 volunteers) said that people volunteer for different reasons; some to beef out a CV by getting valuable work experience, some to get out and about and meet new people, some just to try something different and some to make a difference in their community. All volunteers register with the Centre and are practically supported throughout their placement or for as long as required. The commitment of a volunteer varies; it can range from a few hours a week to a few days! The Volunteer Centre will match an individual to a position appropriate to their particular requirements.

The 23 years of experience of the Volunteer Centre confirms that many volunteers discover skills and interests that they were not aware of, some set off in a new career, some are happy to remain volunteering and for others a 'time bound stint' is most appropriate.

LCDI currently have Volunteering opportunities in driving, elderly care, childcare, charity shops, 'meals on wheels', e-bulletin and welfare advice.

Mayor, Councillor Cathal hOisn commended the invaluable work carried out by all the volunteers across the Borough of Limavady, commenting on this he said: "Without the unselfish and unstinting delivery of these essential services much of the programmes and services on the ground would be left to the statutory bodies and would be much the poorer for it. On a daily basis I meet volunteers from all walks of life and who carry out their activities with neither complaint nor praise but who will receive their reward from the knowledge that they have improved the quality of life of individuals and the community and I would urge everyone with even a modicum of time or skills available to come forward in whatever capacity they feel appropriate."
