Little witches and warlocks compete for Olympic Gold at Hallowe’en sport events

A SERIES of spooky sports events to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Hallowe’en Carnival is being hosted by Derry City Council’s Sports Development Section.

The Hallowe’en Multi-Sports Fun Days are for 6-11 year olds and will give children the opportunity to try out a whole host of sports activities and traditional Hallowe’en games as part of festival celebrations.

The Multi Sports Fun Days are Olympic themed with a series of athletic events and mini competitions between all the children. The events feature a wide variety of sports including races, javelin, shot, hammer, judo, cricket, rugby, soccer and Gaelic.

Tommy Mc Callion Sports Development Officer with Derry City Council said: “We are aiming to make physical activity central to children’s entertainment and events. We have enjoyed much success to date combining physical activity with arts and cultural events and the response from parents has been great.

“The festival gives us a great opportunity to showcase a diversity of activity and introduce new sports to young people with the hope that every child will have the opportunity to find an activity that will interest them and sport will become part of their lives from an early age.”

The Multi Sports Fun Days will take place from 11am – 3pm on Saturday, October 29, and Monday, October 31 in St Columb’s Park Leisure Centre and on Monday, October 31 at Templemore Sports Complex.

Monday is dress up day where instructors and children can make the most of their Hallowe’en costumes and you might just see a Pumpkin or a Witch win Olympic Gold.

Tommy Mc Callion added: “Children are often restless on Hallowe’en day and excited about getting dressed up. There’s a great atmosphere at the Spooky Sports days and they’re a great and healthy way to entertain the children during the day. Everyone is welcome and I would advise parents to book early to avoid any disappointment.”

Admission to Spooky Sports is £2 and includes lunch. Booking is essential and parents are advised to book early. To book or for further information on sports activities please call (028) 7136 1566.
