Man assaulted woman in dispute

A 64-YEAR-old man from the Suffolk Road appeared at Lisburn Magistrates Court on Monday charged with assaulting Bridget Mongan and resisting arrest.

The court heard that the police were called to a domestic incident on Christmas Eve last year and when they arrived the man Patrick Gerard Mongan was in the kitchen but was intoxicated and incoherent.

When the police tried to remove him he kicked out towards the woman and then struggled with the police as well.

His solicitor said that the 64-year-old had been drinking when the offence had been committed and he admitted that he acted stupidly at the time. He said the defendant had apologised for his actions and the woman had forgiven him. He told the court that Mongan had been off the drink for the past month.

District Judge Rosie Watters warned the man that if he committed any other offences that she would have no alternative but to send him to prison.

The defendant was sentenced to three months with a suspended two year sentence for resisting arrest and imprisoned for three months with a suspended sentence for two years for the assault charge.
