McClure calls for action on footpath gritting

DUP Alderman James McClure believes the time has come for Coleraine Borough Council and the Roads Service to team up to ensure footpaths in key town centre areas are gritted in future cold snaps.

Alderman McClure praised the Roads Service for keeping major roads clear during the recent sub zero temperatures over Christmas and the new year holiday period.

He said: "The Roads Service and its employees worked tirelessly to ensure our roads were passable during the worst weather in recent times.

"However, one main complaint I received was about the condition of the pedestrian areas in Coleraine town centre and other footpaths in the town.

"While I can understand that it is not possible to grit footpaths for financial reasons, I believe the time has come for the Council and the Roads Service to talk about this issue and hopefully come to some agreement that the main footpaths in the town centre could be kept free of snow and ice.

"I heard from several people who had fallen or who had friends or relations who fell walking on the difficult and dangerous pedestrian area in Church Street, also at Railway Road.”

The DUP man added: "I believe we should have an agreement with Roads Service to deal with such extreme cases in the interest of public safety."
