Moyle Young Leaders Conference

Moyle District Councils Good Relations Programme brought together young people from across Moyle for a two day Young Leaders Conference on 24th and 25th July.

The project was run in collaboration with Moyle Youth Council and NEELB Youth Workers and took place at Garron Tower, Carnlough.

29 young people attended from Bushmills, Armoy, Ballycastle, Cushendun and Cushendall. Over the two days the participants took part in Good Relations themed workshops and discussed and compared many of the problems and issues faced by young people in their areas of Moyle. They were also given information about the Moyle Youth Council, its aims and objectives and how joining the group could enable them to act collectively and lobby for all of Moyle’s young people.

Challenges were also faced during two outdoor teambuilding sessions with the Ardclinis Outdoor Adventure team, when young people got to experience Laser Tag, Zip Line, Climbing Wall and Archery.

The conference followed on from the Young Leaders Training Days that were held in the Bushmills, Ballycastle and Cushendall areas in March 2012. The overall project aim was to give the young participants a chance to meet, interact and learn about young people from different backgrounds and areas to themselves.

Tracy Walker, acting Good Relations Officer, said ‘The conference went really well and it was rewarding to see the young people interacting and getting on so much. Evaluations showed that they enjoyed the event and meeting other young people from other areas and backgrounds. Many of them would like to take part in similar projects in the future and the majority felt that they had gained something positive from the experience. Many thanks go to the Moyle Youth Council members who helped plan and facilitate the event; Ellie Lewis, Megan McAlonan, Andrea Walker and Connlith Magee, and also to the NEELB Youth Workers, Tara McHugh Logan and Jill Young, who promoted the event, brought groups and helped supervise the residential. However, the biggest thanks go to the young people who attended, both for participating so fully and behaving so well.’
