FOYLE MP Mark Durkan has commended everyone across the community for getting Londonderry into the final 4 shortlist for the UK City of Culture 2013 bid and has called for a final push to secure the title.

Mr Durkan said: "This bid has brought out the best, not only of what our city has to offer, but how our city and region can work together.

"This city and region have a rich history and cultural offering which this effort is bringing to a whole new audience.

"Achieving City of Culture status would bring enormous benefits to our city. It would not only attract tens of millions of pounds in spending throughout the year, but also create an incredible buzz for local people and visitors alike.

"It would also leave a wonderful legacy of cultural infrastructure that will add to our economy and quality of life for decades to come.

"The expansion of the University at Magee, widening our digital economy sector and more flowering of our cultural sector would all receive a great boost.

"The partnerships that have been ignited are a tempting taster of what will be in store if we succeed.

"I have no doubt that the entire city will maintain its shoulder to the wheel in this effort."
