New traffic calming scheme for Low Road

Transport NI informed Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson that they are currently preparing a preliminary design.

In a letter to Mr Donaldson, TransportNI described the area as one that “retains a high position on our prioritised list for the provision of further traffic calming measures”. 

Transport NI have stated that they hope to progress this scheme in the near future, possibly during the forthcoming financial year in 2016/17. 

It will be welcome news to the residents of the area who have complained bitterly of the high volume of traffic on the Low Road over the years.  It is often used as a short cut to avoid traffic on Queensway and many have complained of the number of challenges it presents for pedestrians and for children walking to school.

Commenting on this news, Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson said, “I have received numerous requests from local residents in recent years for the provision of a traffic calming scheme on the Low Road and Grand Street. 

“I have been making representations on behalf of the local residents to Transport NI and I am pleased that they have now given priority status to a traffic calming scheme for this part of Lisburn. 

“This is a busy stretch of road with access to both Fort Hill Primary School and Fort Hill College and therefore with so many children crossing the road, it is important that we have appropriate traffic calming measures to enhance road safety.”

Lagan Valley MP Jonathan Craig, also said, “This is something that will have support from residents. It is important Transport NI consult with the community so residents can have a say in how this scheme should be taken forward.”

and the type of traffic calming measures that would be most appropriate for this stretch of road. 

“I will be working closely with the local Community Association and residents to ensure that the views of local people are taken into account before this scheme proceeds. 

“We will be distributing information to residents and will assist the community to respond to the consultation process whenever Transport NI are in a position to publish their traffic calming scheme.”
