Newtownabbey youngsters praised after quick thinking saves their mum’s life

Ten-year-old Tomas Doole and his seven-year-old sister Ella, stayed calm and helped to save their mum Kerri after she had slipped into a diabetic coma.

Tomas and Ella were alerted to the incident after they heard a noise in their home one morning.

The children went to investigate the noise and discovered their mum had fallen down beside her bed.

The children attempted to wake her, but they were unable to bring her round. Kerri had slipped into a diabetic coma.

Tomas then tried to phone for help on his mum’s mobile phone, but he was unable to contact anyone because the phone kept locking him out.

While Tomas was trying to make the call, Ella got a pillow to put under Kerri’s head and a blanket to put round her to make her more comfortable.

The children were finally able to raise the alarm when they got Ella’s phone and used the Facetime feature to contact their nana who lives in the Isle of Man.

They explained to her what had happened and she was able to raise the alarm and call for an ambulance. She also called their dad to make him aware of the situation.

Their nana then face-timed Tomas and Ella back to keep them company until the emergency services and their dad arrived.

The youngsters remained very calm throughout the whole incident, and because of their quick thinking they had ultimately saved their mum’s life.

Their family are all very proud of the way in which they handled the stressful situation.

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg, recently invited Tomas, Ella and Kerri to the Mayor’s Parlour at Mossley Mill.

He praised the children’s quick thinking and told them how impressed he was with the way in which they had saved their mum’s life.

“Witnessing someone falling ill, especially for a child, can be a very daunting experience. I am very impressed with how calm and brave Tomas and Ella were and they should be very proud of themselves. They are a shining example for the borough,” the DUP representative said.
