Ongoing single lane misery

THE public realm works in Lurgan are starting to take shape, though the ongoing disruption is still proving a bugbear among traders and town users.

Traffic is down to one lane in Market Street and several shops are accessible only by a narrow, fenced off footway.

The ‘MAIL’ has learned of a forthcoming closure at Edward Street and also of a possible issue regarding cash in transit vans.

While work was ongoing on the footpath in Market Street a number of banks have been inaccessible to cash in transit vans. It’s feared now the footpath has been extended there will be nowhere for the secure transits to park.

The single lane of traffic has been causing severe disruption, with lengthy queues of traffic at peak times. On Tuesday morning traffic was queued from Carnegie Street right back to the Robert Street junction.

Traders have long been concerned about the scope of the works and some feel their concerns were ignored when the plans were drawn up.

A spokesperson for SIAC confirmed the public realm works were running on time and should be finished by the target month of September if everything continues according to plan.

Regarding the issues of cash in transit parking he said: “We are working to the design that’s been approved and taken through planning so it’s not something we can change.”

Addressing the Edward Street closure he commented: “There will be a period of closure although there is no formalised date. There are parts of the work that aren’t possible without road closures.”
