Questions are raised over shelving of A2 after £16m spend

SIR, So the Department for Regional Development (DRD) has shelved a major road dualling project for at least four years even though it has already spent £16m on it.

The A2 road runs along the northern shore of Belfast Lough. This must be only only road in history to be continually shelved, because this road has been scheduled to be widened now for over 40 years, if not 50. This must be the only commuter road into Belfast which has suffered this fate.

Please note that Carrickfergus has only two single carriageways between Carrick and Belfast, the Shore Road and the ‘Top Road’, considering the population it has, most of which commutes daily. You are only talking about just over a mile from the University at Jordanstown to the dual carriageway just pass Greenisland.

I know that is a cash flow problem, why must Carrick continue to be the second fiddle?

What’s the use of having a MP who is not interested in one of the major towns in his constituency? Maybe if he and his fellow MLAs were to face the daily journey into and out of Belfast each morning between 7 and 10 and each night between 4 and 7, they would know what the Carrick people have to put up with.
