Orchestra is top of the class'˜accordion' to adjudicators

St. John's accordian orchestra, who are celebrating their recent success in the UK Championships in Liverpool.

The Portadown-based Orchestra competed in the Advanced Orchestral Section at the UK Accordion Championships last month, which was held in the city’s Adelphi Hotel.

Conducted by musical director, Mr A Wilkinson, the Orchestra played ‘Schawenstreiche’ and ‘Rhythmische Impression’.

Having attained a record high score four years ago with 97, the orchestra well and truly outdid themselves this year - scoring 98. This was the highest mark ever recorded in the UK Championships.

Chairman, Mr Tennyson, commented: “They never let me down and always make me proud. They put on an excellent performance which is down to all of their hard work and dedication!”

The UK Accordion Championships are organised annually by the National Accordion Organisation, which first began holding competitions as far back as 1935.

Adjudicators commended Mr Wilkinson for his efficiency and precision on conducting the Orchestra, as well as congratulating the musicians for their ‘very beautiful and accurate playing throughout.’ He also commended their excellent percussion.

St. John’s Orchestra now look forward to returning to the Championships next year - and holding on to their UK title!
