Peace the winner 
for young villagers at Wacky Olympics

Organised by Larne Community Cohesion Project, the fun day brought together 60 young people between the ages of 11-17 who were encouraged to engage in team work to compete in some silly games, including relay races with rubber chickens and encountering the world’s largest underpants.

David McAllister, from the Gangway Project, and two participants from the Young People’s Peer Leadership Project, Sarah O’Neill and Bronagh Mullan, used their leadership skills to help produce an enjoyable and successful day.

Larne Community Cohesion Project is a joint initiative between the neighbouring villages.

The project, which is delivered by Larne Borough Council, is funded through the European Union’s PEACE III programme and is managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the North East PEACE III Partnership.

The aim is to deliver a programme of activities which will involve co-operation and joint working across a number of common themes including the arts, culture, sports and peace-building. It is open to all residents of Carnlough and Glenarm, with specific elements targeted at teenagers and young people.

The project will support peace-building and the promotion of good relations within and between the two villages.

Coast councillor Maureen Morrow, who attended, commented: “It is fantastic to see such a big turnout from both villages and it is very heartening to see the young people from Carnlough and Glenarm coming together to take part in a wide range of stimulating and fun activities.”

Project officer Mary O’Boyle said: “I really am delighted as a great time was had by all and it was good to see young people from the two villages working together on team challenges.”
