Police ‘monitoring’ apppearance of anti-Irish Sea border signs in Glengormley

Police say they will continue to monitor the Glengormley area after flags and signs opposing the Irish Sea border were erected on the Antrim Road.

It follows reports to them by Sinn Fein councillors Rosie Kinnear and Michael Goodman yesterday afternoon (Thursday) about the appearance of posters and, it is understood, an Ulster Banner flag.

In a social media post, Cllr Kinnear said they had raised with officers the “actions of persons putting flags and signs up in the centre of Glengormley this afternoon”.

Thanking police for their response, she added: “The people of north Belfast voted to remain within the European Union and have been taken out against our will. Sinn Fein made clear that there was no good Brexit and what we are left with is a system to mitigate the worst aspects of Brexit.

“No amount of slogans or unsightly graffiti, signs or flags will reverse the damage that Brexit will do to our rights and our economy and that cannot be forgotten.”

In a statement, a PSNI spokesperson said: “Police are aware of reports of posters and flags being erected in the vicinity of Antrim Road, Glengormley. We continue to monitor the situation.”

Hundreds of posters have gone up across Northern Ireland since the Northern Ireland Protocol came into effect on January 1.
