Police to carry out test alcohol purchases

POLICE in Coleraine are using new powers to carry out test alcohol purchases around the borough to raise awareness of age restrictions.

Sgt Sean Craig said that the test purchases would not be used to “catch out” licensees in off-licences or supermarkets or any premises where alcohol is on sale.

“These test purchases will encourage staff to challenge under 18s who are trying to buy alcohol and to ask for proof of identity before making any sale,” said Sgt Craig.

He said that it was widely recognised that the sale of alcohol to under-age drinkers can be linked to anti-social behaviour and he called on parents, guardians and those linked to the retail licence trade to be aware.

He also called on off-licence owners and shop owners to ensure that their staff were fully aware of their responsibilities.
