New retail units and 40 apartments proposed for Glengormley

A planning application has been lodged with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council for a new apartment complex in Glengormley town centre.

Forty-three new apartments have been earmarked for the site of the Thunderdome restaurant complex at Antrim Road.

The application is also seeking permission for six retail units and underground parking.

If successful, the existing Thunderdome building will be demolished.

Recently, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council approved a proposal for a three-storey apartment block in Glengormley.

The new homes at Ballyclare Road will be comprised of 12 two-bedroom and five accessible one-bedroom apartments on a vacant corner site at the junction of Moss Road.

Parking for 19 vehicles and green space provision are included in the plan (read more here).

The Department for Infrastructure has highlighted a need for 4,200 new homes in Antrim and Newtownabbey.

The Department stated that this amounts to 280 new dwellings per annum for the next 15 years.

Department figures have identified a need for 84,800 new homes across Northern Ireland, 7,230 per annum, until 2030.

Sinn Fein has called for social housing to be located in the Glengormley area.
