Translink applies for Bellarena go ahead

Londonderry rail campaigners expressed disappointment last September that the second phase of a £22m upgrade of the Coleraine line was to be delayed until 2016 but Translink has now, at least, started to progress a passing loop and halt at Bellarena.

The transport company has applied for permission for the construction of the new loop with two new platforms adjacent to the Bellarena Level Crossing. In September 2013 Danny Kennedy said procurement issues had delayed phase two of the rail upgrade.

It’s over fifty years since Henry Benson recommended the closure of both the Northern Counties Committee (NCC) and Great Northern Railway (GNR) lines to Londonderry.

Campaigns of varying strengths have been waged for better infrastructural links to the North West ever since.
