Public consultation meetings on dog-ban plan

THE public will be given a say next week on controversial proposals to ban dogs from beaches, playing fields and children’s play parks.

Larne Borough Council is to hold public consultation meetings at Islandmagee and Ballygally to discuss measures included in the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act (NI) 2011 Dog Control Orders.

The legislation imposes stricter regulation on the control of dogs and fouling and extends council wardens’ jurisiction to include “all land within the borough which is open to the air and which the public are permitted and entitled to have access”.

Specifically, it states that dogs taken to cemeteries must be kept on a lead. It will also be an offence to take a dog on to a number of playing fields, play parks and beaches

A council spokesperson said: “As part of its ongoing consultation into Dog Control Orders for the borough, Larne Borough Council have organised two public meetings. They will take place on Wednesday, June 6 in Islandmagee Community Centre and Thursday, June 7 in Ballgally Community Hall. Both will start at 7.30pm with a short presentation on the council’s current proposals, followed by an opportunity for those in attendance to express their views.”
