Record-breaking sports day at St Killian’s College

Two new sprint records were set during the annual end-of-term sports day at St Killian’s College, Garron Tower, recently.

Ellen Hynds achieved her third school record of the season when she ran 1.09.19mins in the 400m.

Earlier in the season, she ran 2:31.45mins for the 800m representing St Killian’s at the NEBSSA finals and 5:05.8mins for the 1500m at the Ulster Schools’ finals .

At the start of 2014, Ellen qualified for the All-Ireland cross-country final where she finished a creditable 16th.

Ellen won silver in the long jump and golds for 1500m, shot and the class relay as well as setting the new 400m standard, making her the top athlete on sports day.

Peter McLoughlin and James Morgan shared top spot for the year 10 boys’ competition, each winning a gold, silver and bronze.

Another record-breaker on sports day was Niamh McIntosh, who clocked 13.03 seconds for the year 11 100m. Niamh also won the 200m and picked up a silver in the long jump as well as helping her class win the relay.

Top year 11 boy was Dariusz Halasa, who claimed three individual gold medals in 100m, 200m and long jump, a silver for the shot and he helped his class win the relay.

In year eight, Caoimhe O’Hara won gold in the 200m and long jump as well as silver in the 100m while Dylan Taggart was the top boy with gold in 1500m, silver in long jump and bronze in 200m.

In year nine, Jamie McConaghie came out on top with three golds in 200m, 400m and long jump with Jessica Cochrane winning two golds 100m and long jump as well as silver in the 200m silver.
