Rescue dog Ozzie becomes a hero as he saves family

A local family are lucky to be alive thanks to their superhero dog, Ozzie, who became an early warning system when the carpet in their living room caught fire.

The Biggerstaff family - Samantha and Robert and their daughters Rebecca and Ellie - recently brought Ozzie home to join their family.

And Ozzie proved to be a a life-saver when his barking prevented their house from burning down.

“It was about six in the evening,” explained Samantha.

“My husband and I were in the kitchen making dinner and the girls were upstairs.

“I could hear Ozzie barking and barking but we didn’t think much of it.

“When he didn’t stop I went into the living room to see what was wrong.

“As I turned the corner I could see flames. We have a stove fire and a piece of coal had fallen out and set fire to the carpet.

“If Ozzie hadn’t barked loudly to let us know it could have been a disaster.

“The fire would have caught hold and who knows what would have happened.”

Ozzie has become the hero of the family and everyone is thankful for the decision to bring him home.

Ozzie, a terrier cross, was being housed at the Almost Home Animal Rescue sanctuary in Moira and was on the look out for a new home.

“My friend Claire McFarland and her husband James volunteer with Almost Home and help to raise money for them,” explained Samantha.

“Claire sent me a photograph of Ozzie and told me that I should give him a home.

“I rang Karen at Almost Home and she told me to come and have a look.

“As soon as she brought Ozzie out I knew straight away we wanted him.

“We have another dog called Oscar and the two of them got on really well. He has settled in really well.”

“We have been praising him so much,” continued Samantha. “He definitely got lots of cuddles.”

And the Biggerstaff family aren’t the only ones who think Ozzie is a hero.

On April 25 in Lurgan Park, Almost Home Animal Rescue will be presenting Ozzie with their ‘Hero’ award at the ‘Bark in the Park’ event.

Join Ozzie and all the other four legged friends at the charity walk.

‘Bark in the Park’ starts at 7.30pm and costs £10.
