Soccer clubs pay tribute to referee Richard Scott who died in work accident

An investigation has got underway after a young South Derry man died in an accident at an NIE Networks substation in County Armagh yesterday.

Richard Scott from Shandon Park, Castledawson, was employed by the energy company.

Paul Stapleton, managing director at NIE Networks, said: “It is with great sadness that we confirm an incident at Drumnakelly Main Substation this morning (Wednesday} resulted in the fatality of one of our colleagues.

“The family of the employee has been informed and our deepest sympathies are with them at this incredibly difficult time. An investigation by both NIE Networks and the Health and Safety Executive is under way into the circumstances of the incident.”

Mr Scott,who was in his early 30s, was also an accomplished referee and was familiar face at local soccer grounds.

The head of refereeing with the Irish Football Association, Trevor Moutray, paid tribute to him.

“Richard was an experienced assistant referee, who officiated in the Premier Intermediate League and the Championship,” he said.

“He gave a number of loyal years to refereeing and will be sorely missed across the refereeing community. Our thoughts and prayers go to his family at this difficult time.”

Castledawson-based Moyola Park AFC posted its condolences on their Facebook page: "It is with great sadness that we have today learned of the passing of Richard Scott. Richard being a local lad was no stranger to Mill Meadow and in his role as Referee and Assistant Referee had attended many of our games including helping at Youth games and Tournaments.

"All at the club pass on our deepest condolences to the entire Scott family circle at this difficult time."

Tobermore United FC also extended sympathy to Mr Scott's family circle.

In a social media post they said: "The club has been plunged into sadness tonight as we have learned of the tragic death of Richard Scott (Scotty). An esteemed referee, assistant referee and friend to the club.

"We would like to pass on our sincere condolences to Richards family and friends and to our friends and colleagues in football. Richard will not be forgotten by the players, coaching staff and committee members. Richard was to referee our preseason game v Ballymoney this Saturday, this match has been cancelled as a mark of respect."

Draperstown Celtic FC said they were shocked to learn of the tragic death of Richard Scott. Richard refereed Saturdays match against Tobermore.

"The Committee of Draperstown Celtic, on behalf of the entire club, wish to pass on our condolences to Richards family and his football friends and family at this extremely difficult time. Rest in peace Richard," they said in a social media post.

And Coagh United FC said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of local referee, Richard Scott. Richard was not only a regular referee and supporter at our games, but he was a very dear friend of our player, Aaron Campbell. Our thoughts are with Richard’s family and friends at this extremely sad time. We cannot imagine the loss you are feeling. Rest in Peace."
