Some foul play at Pollock Mews

A LURGAN man, living in an unfinished development, has told of his problematic living conditions.

Pollock Mews resident Kenny Clydesdale, said he has to wade through toilet water in his bathroom because of regular flooding and drag his bins across a field to have them emptied.

He wants to see the development adopted onto both the water and roads network.

Carew Developers, the company responsible for Pollock Mews, say they want the same, but nothing can be done until all the houses are finished.

The latest problem for Kenny has been the flooding of his toilet brought about by an ongoing problem with sewers.

“That’s three times this year this has happened,” said Kenny, producing a picture of the flooded toilet.

“The sewer water comes up all over the floor of the downstairs bathroom. The smell is terrible. There’s two kids in the house and Environmental Health have been out and said this is a serious health hazard.”

Council’s Environmental Health department confirmed they had visited the scene and passed on advice to the householder. They also contacted the developer regarding the situation.

Kenny has been renting in Pollock Mews for one and half years. It’s understood some houses were finished four years ago, but the sewers and roads have not been put forward for adoption yet.

Kenny added: “Some of it's down to poor design. I have to go over a field to leave the bins out. In the winter you have to take your bins out in your wellingtons.”

Eileen McKnight of Carew Development commented: “Work is still in progress. NI Water or Roads Service can’t adopt it until we’ve finished.

“There’s no one wants this development finished and adopted more than us. We are standing by the development until it is adopted.

"Two years ago we took out cat skins. On Monday we removed 45 disposable nappies that were blocking up the sewer lines. On Tuesday we came back to take out a man’s jacket.”

A spokesperson for NI Water said: “We can confirm that the sewers in the Pollock Mews development have not been adopted and the maintenance of these remains the responsibility of the developer.

“The remedial works required to bring the sewers to an adoptable standard is currently being reviewed and NI Water will work closely with DRD Roads Service to discuss options for taking forward the adoption of the sewers and streets within this development.”
