Suspended term for stealing £8 worth of goods

Thirty-two-year-old Elizabeth Henry, whose address was given to the court as Monbrief Walk, Craigavon, pleaded guilty to stealing goods valued at £20 from Iceland in Lurgan on March 23 this year.

She also admitted the theft of goods valued at £8 from the same store on March 26.

For each offence she was sentenced to two months in prison, the terms to run consecutively making a total of four months.

The sentences were suspended for two years and Henry was ordered to pay £28 compensation for the items she stole.

The court heard that management at Iceland reported two thefts by the same woman and Henry was identified through CCTV.

On the first occasion she stole ready meals, bacon and ribs and on the second occasion bacon and hand soap.

When she was interviewed by police she made a full admission, saying she had been a bit low on money that week.

Mr Conor Downey, representing the defendant, said she had received a suspended sentence for other matters in Newry Crown Court.

District Judge, Mr Peter King, said Henry had 21 previous convictions for offences of dishonesty and she had a six month prison sentence hanging over her.
