Boyd Black, Secretary of the Labour Party in Northern Ireland said: “He was highly active and when in good health he spent a lot of time canvassing for the party in England.

“In more recent years, he did a vast amount of work on the telephone, particularly around European funding.”

Mr Black said that his party colleague had been someone who had organised the workforce to ensure their rights were protected in various places where he was employed.

“He consistently followed what he considered to be Labour principals and was exceptional in his commitment.

“A Labour Party stalwart, he will be greatly missed.”
