Councillors to work tocreate youth quarter

A YOUTH quarter for young people in Londonderry may be on the cards after local councillors agreed to create such a meeting place.

Sinn Féin councillor Eric McGinley presented a motion to the Council’s full monthly meeting for April and suggested it could work well towards meeting the targets set out in the Londonderry One Plan.

The motion, which passed with cross-party support, “recognised that younger people of today’s society have different recreational needs and expectations.”

Councillor McGinley moved: “That this council works with statutory bodies, schools, youth workers and - particularly - young people to create a meeting place in the city for teenagers to gather and socialise in an alcohol free environment.”

The motion was passed with cross-party support although DUP Alderman Maurice Devenney said the views of all stakeholders should be counted.
