Parts of NW may be battered by violent storm force winds

Whilst the Met Office has issued no warnings for County Londonderry, Met Éireann, the Irish Meteorological Service, has issued two ‘orange’ level alerts for Ulster and the marine area.

Dublin’s ‘orange’ alerts are for conditions that may impact significantly on people and imply all recipients in the affected areas should prepare themselves in an appropriate way for the anticipated conditions.

In a wind warning for Donegal, Met Éireann warns: “Becoming stormy this evening and tonight and continuing for a time tomorrow with South to Southwest winds mean speed 65 to 90 km/hr with gusts 110 to 130 km/hr.

“Heavy rain, high tides and high seas also, with local flooding, especially in coastal areas.”

In a gale warning it states: “South to Southeast gales will develop later today on all Irish Coastal Waters and on the Irish Sea. South to Southwest gale to storm force winds will follow to all sea areas this evening and tonight with winds possibly touching violent storm force on the Northwest coast.”

It warns winds at sea will possibly reach violent storm force 11 for a time in the Northwest and there is a warning of heavy swell on the entire Atlantic coast.
