UUP leader is Thursday’s guest at Lenten Lecture

It has become a popular annual event, and last week there was upwards of 70 people in attendance to hear the guest speaker, Rev Dr Johnston McMaster, lecturer and Co-ordinator of the Education for Reconciliation Programme, Irish School of Ecumenics, and retired minister.

The series continues tomorrow, Thursday, at 1.05pm when the speaker will be Mike Nesbitt MLA, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party.

The Dean of Derry, Dr William Morton, said with the centenary of so many key events in history happening, or about to happen, like the outbreak of World War 1, or the Battle of the Somme, it was decided by the Committee to ask the invited speakers to address the issue of being retrospective and learning from the past, how we interpret the present and how we prepare to live in a better way in the future.

“The whole concept of Lent is not only to achieve spiritual renewal through self-denial and self-discipline, important as these areas all are, but also to look at the world around us and question ourselves as to our part in creating a better and more peaceful community,” Dean Morton said.

The sessions, every Thursday, begin at 1.05pm and are scheduled to end about 1.50 when light refreshments will follow.
