Waste disposal charges fail - Sinn Fein

A plan by Moyle District Council to charge local schools for waste disposal has failed after strong opposition from Sinn Fein.

Speaking about the move Sinn Fein Councillor Colum Thompson said: “When this was discussed several councillors, who displayed a degree of apathy on the entire subject, suggested that charging schools for waste disposal would not impact on their budget for the year, however I asked for more information on the subject and I am glad that I did. It was confirmed that if Moyle District Council did charge schools for waste disposal the money would come from their existing budget and it would have had an adverse affect on the quality of education being delivered to our children.

“At the council meeting on Monday, March 25th, I proposed and thankfully enough councillors agreed that we would not impose these charges. Our local schools are already under pressure when it comes to budgets and to impose this extra charge may well have caused schools to cut back on other resources.

“It could even have caused job losses within schools. I fully understand the need for council to make savings wherever possible so that rates charges can be kept as low as possible however imposing a charge which would have a serious negitive impact on the education of the children in Moyle is not the way to achieve this.”
