Councillor Mark O’Dowd has welcomed a decision by Roads Service to carry out a traffic survey as volumes of traffic have grown in recent years.

Mr O’Dowd said he had been approached by residents who were concerned at the ever growing volumes of traffic, including heavy goods vehicles, using the road as an alternative to having to negotiate the town centre.

He said: “The traffic using this residential road has grown considerably over recent years and it has now become extremely difficult for those living in the many housing developments to access their homes.

“Following representations from local people I contacted officials at Roads Service and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their quick response.

“They have agreed to undertake a traffic survey with a view to identifying the volume, make-up and speed of traffic using this road. The information gained over the next couple of months will be used in making an assessment of what, if any, control measures are required and we await the final decision.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Regional Development said there will be a survey but it could take some months.
