Whiteabbey Primary pupils enjoy Titanic experience

TEACHERS and pupils from Whiteabbey Primary School were welcomed by Northern Ireland Science Park (NISP) on an educational visit to Belfast's maritime landmark site, the Titanic's Dock and Pump-House recently.

With RMS Titanic now firmly in the schools curriculum, NISP organisers have designed a visitors’ experience from which schoolchildren of all ages can benefit. In addition to exhibition material, visiting schools can support their school work with an all new special education pack which can be downloaded at www.titanicsdock.com/Education.aspx.

Titanic’s Dock and Pump House was once the beating heart of the old shipyards during the construction of the great White Star Liners - the Britannic, Olympic and most famously, the Titanic. Now, home to a newly refurbished Visitor Centre, Caf and Interpretative Centre, Titanic’s Dock and Pump-House offers an environment for pupils from across Northern Ireland to engage in a valuable and enriching educational experience.

During their visit, the Whiteabbey pupils took a guided tour of the site where they were able to gather an understanding of the story of the dock and surrounding shipyards. Visiting the Edwardian Pump-House pupils absorbed the sounds and sights of the powerful pumps brought to life through state-of-the-art interpretative panels, archive film footage, and computer-generated imagery.

Walking along the full length of the dock, the children were then given the opportunity to truly capture the size and scale of the Titanic.

NISP Director of Corporate Real Estate and Facilities, Mervyn Watley, said: “We are delighted that Whiteabbey Primary School came to visit Titanic’s Dock and Pump-House and I hope that they learnt a lot and also had a great day out.

“The whole experience is designed to help show young people the importance of science subjects and the continuity of science-based industries here over the decades.”
