Cookstown edge closer to Keightley Cup glory

Amazingly, the Reds were 19 points behind fierce rivals Lisnagarvey at one stage. However, thanks to Annadale and some good recent form, Cookstown have propelled themselves to the top of the summit with a stunning fight-back.

Even after a disappointing 4-4 draw with Lisnagarvey in the league on 21st March, hopes of the title coming to Coolnfrankey were slim.

The turning point proved to out to be a fixture that didn’t even involve the Tyrone outfit. Annadale produced one of the shock results of the season to defeat Lisnagarvey 4-2 last Saturday. Victory for Garvey would have all but sealed the title.

Garvey were then relying on Annadale to continue their fine run of form by defeating Cookstown last night. However, Cookstown have hit form at the right time.

With the inspirational Ian Sloan returning from international duty, Cookstown have forced their way to the summit. Cookstown thrashed Annadale by 7-1 to edge towards Keightley Cup glory.

Four goals from Sloan and goals from Jonny Ames, Gareth Cuddy and Timmy Smyth handed the Reds the victory they need to stay in contention.

Cookstown now only require a single point from their remaining fixture against North Down on Saturday at Coolnafranky. Their opponents have already been relegated and Cookstown go into the tie as heavy favourites.
