Deborah recalls golden success in Singapore

NORTHERN Ireland ladies netball team recently scooped gold at the Six Nations Championships in Singapore.

Helping them to their biggest ever win was Lisburn girl Deborah McCarthy who was only recently called up to the senior squad.

"It was a great experience," said the 21-year-old who plays for Larkfield Netball Club.

"We had a great time both on and off the court. During the sightseeing we visited the big wheel called 'The Flyer' and we also saw the spectacular sight of people putting their New Year resolutions in a big ball and then into the water. It was incredible to see it."

On the court the girls won six matches with the following impressive results: 65-32 win over Tanzania; 81-45 over Canada; 66-41 over Malaysia; 52-35 over Singapore; 55-31 over Scotland and again 40-34 over Scotland.

"The scores look impressive but we hard to work very hard to establish our grip on the games," added Deborah, a former pupil of Ballymacash Primary and Laurelhill College.

It has been an eventful year for Deborah who also travelled to the Cook Islands in August last year with the NI team for the World Cup where they finished in the top eight.

Now Deborah and the team are looking forward to the next challenge which comes in March at the Fena Championships which includes games with Scotland, Wales and England.
