Devenney lands try as Under-17s see off Ballymena

Carrickfergus RFC Youth sides travelled to Ballymena on Saturday under no illusions that nothing less than 100 per cent commitment on their part would be needed to record winning results in what would be very difficult league fixtures.

At U17s level Carrick made a very positive start with wing-forward Jordan Devenney pouncing on a dropped ball, kicking through to score a try under the posts in the opening minute which was converted by S Wallace.

Carrick’s lead was extended 10 minutes later with a penalty from Wallace.

To their credit, Ballymena hit back with a converted try before half-time.

In the second half Carrick again scored first but Ballymena responded with one of their own but despite sustained pressure could not add to their tally.

Final score: Ballymena U17s 12 v Carrick U17s 17.

Man of the Match: Connor Cambridge.

Carrick U15s lost 27-0 to a very strong Ballymena side who are yet to concede a try this season.

The young Carrick side battled bravely against a very physically big side. U15s coaches R. Higgins and K. Jordan took a lot of positives out of the game and look forward to next week’s league match against Randalstown.

At U13s level Carrick recorded a comprehensive 64-0 victory against Ballymena. Special mention to number eight Jack Cooper and out-half Ciaran Wilson who between them scored seven tries and seven conversions! Carrick’s additional two tries where scored by centre C. Jenkins.

This weekend Carrick face tough leagues games at home against Randalstown. Kick-off: 11 am at Tom Simms Memorial Park.
