Amateurs progress after Shield ‘derby’ victory

Carniny Amateurs II won the eagerly anticipated all-Ballymena ‘derby’ to progress in the County Antrim Junior Shield.

The Reds beat Saturday Morning League neighbours Ahoghill Rovers in a rare competitive fixture between clubs from the two local leagues.

Elsewhere, Junior Division Three side Wakehurst Strollers ran intermediate Ballynure Old Boys close in the Crawford Cup, with the east Antrim side eventually prevailing by three goals to two.

CRAWFORD CUP, ROUND ONE

Ballynure Old Boys 3, Wakehurst Strollers 2: Ronnie Burns opened the scoring for Ballynure on the 20th minute but Strollers hit back with the equaliser from John Alexander two minutes later.

Ballynure went in front for a second time after Michael Duff scored on the 32nd minute and got a third after Andy Forsythe scored on the 44th minute.

Strollers pushed hard to cut the deficit in the second half and Alexander converted a penalty on the 78th minute but Ballynure closed ranks to claim the win.

Other result: Killymoon Rangers Reserves 3, Krag Albion 3 (aet, Killymoon won 4-2 on pens)

JUNIOR DIVISION ONE

Magherafelt Sky Blues 1, Chimney Corner Reserves 2: Corner claimed the points thanks to goals scored by Michael McGroggan and Ciaran Faith.

Ahoghill Rovers 2, Carniny Amateurs II 4: Ahoghill took an early lead in this cup tie then on the 25th minute, Barry Simpson scored the equaliser for Carniny.

Carniny went in front on the 60th minute with Dean Surgenor scoring from close range.

Things got better for Carniny after Kamil Miechurski scored on the 72nd minute followed by a fourth by Barry Simpson on the 78th minute.

Ahoghill never gave up and got a second goal on the 82nd minute but failed to break Carniny down again.

IFA JUNIOR CUP, ROUND ONE

Ballykelly United 4, Antrim Rovers 3: Antrim trailed by three goals before Darren Brammeld scored, but a fourth by the home side saw them still clear at half-time.

Antrim came back well in the second half, with Darren Brammeld and Graham Carmichael scoring, but were unlucky not to take the game to extra time.
