The Championship side will play Glenavon in July and Blues boss Gary Hamilton also revealed to the Mail as part of the deal the club will get 10 per cent of any sell on fee should Robbie move to another club.

“It’s a fantastic deal, foremost for Robbie to give him the chance to go full-time,” said Hamilton.

“He was to sign on a YTS deal, but after he scored twice in an Under-17 game while on trial a few weeks ago they ripped that up and offered him a two year pro contract. I’m delighted for Robbie. He is a great lad. He has bags of skill, he can score goals, but his biggest quality is that he listens.

“It is rewarding when you have a young player getting a move like this. I thought he would have gone at the start of the season, but it has all gone through now.”

McDaid, 18, who has featured in Northern Ireland’s Under-18 and Under-19 squads was attracting interest from several English clubs.

Leeds boss Brian McDermott, who sourced players from Ireland during his years as Reading’s chief scout, has met with McDaid and his parents. “He’s a young player with great potential. I met him and his parents and he’s a lovely lad,” he said.

Robbie is getting the chance at full time football his dad just missed out on.

“His father John played for Derry City and Glentoran, but was all set to go to Everton only to suffer a leg break the week before,” added Gary.

“His father has been a great support to Robbie. I am pleased the deal has gone through because they are a lovely family.”

On the game with Leeds, Gary says it is a massive coup for Glenavon.

The game will be in July, with the date yet to be arranged.
