Martyn agrees new contract

The 32-year-old joined the club on a short term contract at the beginning of November. Since his arrival the Blues have lost just one of six matches with the mobile midfielder doing much to change his side’s fortunes.

Things certainly look like they could be on the up for Glenavon with Derry City’s record goalscorer Mark Farren to come into their panel in January and rumours of further recruits joining the squad.

Player/manager Gary Hamilton has first moved quickly to ensure that Martyn remains at the club and was delighted to get his man signed onto a longer-term contract.

“It’s great for the club,” he said. “I played with Ciaran at Glentoran and brought him to Glenavon and we’re delighted that he’s agreed to stay. He’s made a massive difference since he’s come in to the club and we’ve only lost one game. We didn’t even deserve to get beaten that day.

“Ciaran’s a big player and he brings a lot of experience to a relatively young side. He’s another winner and it’s great news for the club that he’s staying on.

“He’s fit and he is a big presence in our team. He’s hard to mark. He’ll admit himself that he’s not technically as good as the likes of Niall Henderson but the workrate he puts into a game, the box to box running he does, the headers and tackles he wins are big plusses to any team.

“He has made a difference but I think the rest of the boys have stepped up another gear as well and they’re playing to their potential. That’s all about getting players back fit again, its not to do with anything else except getting a settled team. It’s made a big difference.”
