Terry wins first international capat the age of 72

Terry, who played for Mid Ulster side Donacloney on his 70th birthday, will turn out for Northern Ireland Vets 55s against England Vets at Mourneview Park on Saturday.

It is only the second game for the 55s, most of the squad play for the Northern Ireland Vets 50s team who recently retained their Home International trophy for the fourth year in a row.

Also in the squad for Saturday are former Portadown and Glenavon striker Jimmy Gardiner, Glenavon midfielder Ronnie Haughey, Portadown’s Dessie Edgar, Cliftonville’s Marty Tabb and Glentoran’s Seamus Heath and Barney Bowers.

“It didn’t take much to persuade Terry to play,” said organiser of the game Ronnie Haughey.

“He is the oldest, but one of the fittest in the team and ironically wins his first international cap at 72.

“The 50s team won the Home International trophy on home soil four years ago, we won it again in Cardiff, then again in Watford and this year shared the trophy with Scotland.

“We are indebted to Glenavon for allowing us to use Mournview Park and the club chairman Adrian Teer was only to happy to facilitate us. The ladies at Glenavon are also putting on a tea after the game which is a fantastic effort.

“The game is free and it would be nice to see the fans come along and enjoy the fun.” The match starts at 3.00pm.
