A last minute goal from Katie Mullan sealed a 2-6, 1-6 win and send the fans in to raptures

Amid the scenes of jubilation from the Eogha Rua players and supporters the winning captain Meabh McGoldrick expressed her delight at what they had just achieved.

“Its unreal to think about it just at the minute,” she said. “We started well in the first half then let it go a bit and let them get back into it towards the end of the half. It was a very tough, hard game, there wasn’t much camogie played as the ground conditions were very heavy.

“They were a much bigger side than us and the conditions probably suited them better, we were relying on our speed towards the end. We knew we had to just grind and work as hard as they were doing and take our scores when the chances came along and thankfully we did that.

“It certainly was in the balance and there’s no better time to get a goal than in the last minute. There’s also no harder way to lose a game than to a last ditch effort and I sort of feel sorry for the Lismore players as I know how hard they must have worked for this just like us.

“But I think we were just the better side on the day and we would have felt bitterly disappointed if it was them that got that last second winning score,” said Meabh.

Having emulated their footballing ‘brothers’, quite literally in Meabh’s case with Barry, Ciaran and Sean Leo all part of the 2007 Eoghan Rua side that just missed out on glory, the Eoghan Rua captain was already looking forward to the March 7 final.

“It’s really brilliant, we can’t wait, its gonna be another big day for the club,” she said. “We’re hoping to finish off the season with four trophies (Derry championship and league along with the Ulster championship already in the cabinet) and bring back the silverware to Pairc Eoghain Rua.”
