Glebe bank on having one last sting in the tail

GLEBE Rangers go into their final game of the season buzzing following a vital 2-0 win away at Coagh United on Saturday.

All three points winged their way to Glebe following a Tommy Elder goal and a sweet strike from Peter Kennoway.

The result means Glebe just have to sting the same opposition this weekend at the Riada Stadium to ensure Championship 1 survival.

Rangers manager Gareth Scott paid tribute to his side's bee-dazzling performance on the day and said he was confident they would be fired up towards pollen in maximum points again this time around.

"Glebe Rangers is like a bumble bee," said Scott.

"When you look at it shouldn't be able to fly, its body is too large and its wings too small - but it does.

"Not long ago all the so-called pundits and experts said we would struggle at this level but we are showing them what we are all about.

"The professionalism of the players was again of the highest order on Saturday.

"Coagh being the home team took the game to us in the first 10 minutes but we remained solid and started to take control of things.

"Tommy Elder was very, very unlucky to hit the post with an effort but minutes later got his just desserts when he sprung the offside trap and coolly finished.

"Then came a goal the likes of which would grace any pitch in the world.

"Coagh cleared our corner and the ball dropped to Peter Kennoway 35 yards out who just drilled it.

"It was an absolutely incredible strike and capped off a fantastic month for that young man. It was like Wayne Rooney's against Newcastle a few years ago - only better!

"From then on we defended very resolutely and despite the loss of William Wharry early in the second half saw it through to the end."

The result means that should Glebe beat Coagh United this weekend then Glebe will be guaranteed to be plying their trade in the division next year. Should the result go to the visitors and Coagh win their two games in hand then it could be Glebe dropping down.

Scott praised the 50-plus travelling contingent on Saturday and called on locals to make a bee-line for the Riada this weekend to cheer the lads over the finish line.

"I don't think there is another club in the Championship who bring that big an away support," he said.

"They were a credit to the club and to the Championship.

"I would call on any football or sports fans in the Ballymoney area to come along and support us on Saturday.

"This is perhaps the biggest match Glebe Rangers has ever been involved in. We need all the support we can get on the day.

"It will be a great day for the underdog, and a great day for Ballymoney.

"We are going for something which was deemed Mission Impossible just six weeks ago, but is now very much on. It should be a great day.

"This is a Championship club in every aspect on the pitch and off the pitch. We have to make sure it remains that way.

"We have peaked at the right time. Other clubs want to win but at Glebe we expect to win and it will take a very, very good side to beat us. They are all playing with their heart on their sleeve for an absolutely top class club.

"This is a special group of young men at a special club."

The Riada Stadium is sure to be a hive of activity this Saturday, match starts at 3pm.
