Jeff gets over poor start at Silverwood

IT was a lovely sunny day at Silverwood Golf Club with just enough wind to make you think about your club selection for the monthly medal.

The winner with an excellent score of a net 66 and a gross of two over was eight handicapper Kieran Murray now playing off six.

Kieran had a great front nine of 34, one under par, which included three birdies at the 1st, 7th, and 8th holes with two bogeys at the 3rd and the 5th and with pars at the remaining holes. His back nine consisted off six pars at the 10th, 11th, 14th 16th 17th and 18th holes and three bogeys at the 12th, 13th and 15th holes. This was a great round of golf and secured Kieran’s first ever monthly medal win.

In second place was past captain Liam Mackle with a net 67, this ten handicapper now playing off nine had a front nine of 39 shots with one birdie at the 3rd, three pars at the 2nd, 4th and 9th and five bogeys at the 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th holes, but Liam keep his best golf for the back nine with only one bogey at the 15th hole and eight pars for a solid 38 shots gross 77 and net 67.

In third place with a net 68 was John Marley now playing off a seven handicap. John had a front nine of 35 level par with two birdies at the 3rd and 7th holes and two bogeys at the 6th and 8th holes with the remaining holes all pars for a very solid start. His back nine contained six pars at the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 16th, and 17th holes, an ugly double bogey at the 15th hole and a single bogey at the 18th hole for a gross 76 net 68.

It was a welcome return to the gross winning circle for six handicapper Conor Jordan with a gross 77. Conor had a front nine of 37 with only two bogeys at the 3rd and 9th holes, his back nine contained six pars and three bogeys at

the 10th, 14th and 17th holes and with the green’s slowly but surely improving you can expect to see this player in the winner’s circle again in the not to distance future.

In fourth place was Paul Hamill with a net 69, Paul had a front nine score of 44 and a back nine score of 46 Paul too endured the wrath of the match and handicap convenor losing one shot of his handicap now playing off 20.

Fifth place went to Gerard McCarthy with another net 69. Gerard went around the front nine in 40 shots and the back nine in 44 shots for a total of 84 and he too has lost a shot and is now playing of 14.

The senior’s prize was won by Ernest McBride with a net 71 and the section prizes were as follows:

0-12 Sean Ashe net 70; 13-18 David Mason net 69; 19-28 Naill Geoghegan net 71.

There were 9 two’s this week and the competition on Saturday is the Spring Cup.

The senior’s got underway in the MUSA league at the opening venue of Mourne on Monday 15th April.

The best scoring pairs for Silverwood were Frank Gallagher and Joe Kelly with 39 points and the top pairing of David Mill’s and Peter Graham with 41 points, both off a 15 handicap.
