Local lads praised for international efforts

NORTHERN Ireland Junior International assistant manager Trevor McKendry last night paid tribute to five local lads who represented the team at the Umbro Quadrangle tournament.

Northern Ireland lost their opening match 2-0 on Wednesday but bounced back the following day to draw with the Republic.

They finished up with another draw on Saturday against the Isle of Man.

McKendry told Times Sport the side were unfortunate not to record at least one victory but said the experience would prove an invaluable experience for all those involved.

"Overall it went very well," he said.

"Results-wise it didn't go as well as it could have but bearing in mind the football we played we didn't get the rewards we perhaps deserved.

"We played some lovely football throughout the tournament, we just didn't get the rub of the green at times.

"We were unlucky to draw Scotland in the first game who are notoriously difficult having won it three times running.

"The experience they have along with the size of the country and catchment area make them very strong opponents.

"Having said that, on the day we more than matched them but gave away two silly goals. In the other two games we played very, very well but failed to take our chances.

"But it is a learning curve. We had some young lads who can go on and play at a higher level.

"It was a wonderful experience for the lads and everyone involved with the team.

"We didn't get the results we were looking for but hopefully they enjoyed it."

Local boys Gareth McConaghie, Peter Spratt, Denver Gage, Lee Patrick and Michael McQuitty all played their part during the competition.

McKendry said of them: "They were all excellent.

"Everyone of them acquitted themselves really well and the coaching staff were more than happy with them."

The Junior Squad will now be focusing on the Regions Cup in September.
