Neill agrees contract

GLENAVON completed their first signing of the close season on Monday evening when Kyle Neill put pen to paper on a two-year contract.

The former Glentoran left-sided player was released by the East Belfast club two weeks ago and Marty Quinn was quick to bring him to Mourneview Park after having been linked with him in the January transfer window.

“I’m glad to get a player of Kyle’s experience and calibre on board,” said the boss.

“He’s hungry and he wants to prove a few people wrong which is the right attitude. At this moment in time, if Kyle’s coming on board I’ll be looking at him as a left-back.”

Quinn has also offered terms to another left-back this week with Mark Turkington looking set to sign a new deal at the club. If he does sign on, he will be joining Mark Haughey and Hugh Dickson who completed new contacts at the club last week.

“Mark Haughey and Hugh Dickson both put pen to paper on new one year contracts and we’ve also offered Turk terms,” said gaffer, Quinn.

“Turk hasn’t played much football but he has been very good and very loyal. He’s been called on to play Reserve team football and he was away to play at the drop of a hat. He was very dependable and he’s a lad that I’d like to have around me. He won himself a contract by his willingness to be available to play for the club. He showed a desire to compete for a place and I’ve given him that opportunity.

“I haven’t seen the best of him but I do remember Mark Turkington being a lot better than he has shown and hopefully he can get back to that standard. Mark came in at the start of the season with an injury and confidence wasn’t great playing under a new manager and under pressure. He didn’t do himself justice but he gives me cover in the left-back and centre-back spots.

“That’s me content and happy with what I have at the back so I’ll have to look forward now to my striking department which is the main area I want to get sorted out. I’m still working on that. People are speculating about players going here and there but I haven’t ruled a couple of players out.”

However Quinn has also had to let some players leave the club as his trimming of the squad continues.

“We’ve placed Shea Campbell on the free transfer list and Paul Carvill, Mark Gracey and Gary Liggett have come out of contract. There could be as many as seven players leaving this close season with three or four coming in.”
